Should You Continue Working after Retirement?
The short answer is, “It depends.”
“I miss the purpose of working and, at times, the comradeship”, was one response we received from our recent survey of retirees.
This a sentiment that rings true for many upon retiring from the workforce. This is not to say that retirement is not incredibly enjoyable (and relaxing!) or to be looked forward to, but rather that it is a big change that takes a period of adjustment, adaptation and even reassessment of what is important in your life.
Only You Can Determine What’s Important to You (But, We Can Help!)

Some Of Us Have To Work Into Retirement – That’s Our Financial Reality
It is true there is a substantial and sobering need for work in retirement. This is due not only to the fact that longevity has stretched past the budget of the average nest egg, but also to the fact that the cost of living has ballooned. Search job opportunities for retirees in our 4Retirees community.
Some Of Us May Want To Try Something We’ve Never Done
Senior employment opportunities don’t have to be the droll exercise in the mundane that they once were. With the development of the shared economy, the time, effort and skill involved in what you choose as work is at your own behest. This may well be the time where you choose do something more meaningful than you have ever done before or more fun! And the best thing: working after retirement can improve your outlook, quality of life, lifespan (and bank balance!)
Some of Us Need to Ensure Our Sense of Purpose Remains Intact
One of the things that keeps us feeling alive and moving forward in life is a sense of purpose. Meaning in life is a rather muddled and murky thing to define, but one thing is for sure, we won’t find that meaning without a sense of purpose. As you get older and retire from working full time, you could begin to lose direction from your ‘inner compass’. Indeed, reports suggest that living a meaningful life leads to longevity, and not keeping up intellectual stimulation can lead to Alzheimer’s disease. So as the old adage goes, ‘ use it or lose it’. Moreover, being bored can actually be dangerous for your health, and is linked with a high incidence of heart disease.
Some Of Us Want to Keep Learning
Continued education and pursuit of personal interests are key ways to keep your brain active and healthy. Are you someone who always had a passion, but never had the time to pursue it? Perhaps now is the time to embrace continued education, a time to study what you always secretly wanted to do. Sometimes in life, we just don’t have the choice when it comes to working at something we want to do. Now that you have the time to do what you want to do, don’t let it go to waste. Make it meaningful to you.
Some of Us Crave Social Interaction
Social interaction is also integral to the process of healthy aging.
Retirement can bring on feelings of social isolation which can then increase the risk of dementia and other health related issues. It is often cited that it is our social relationships and interactions that define us. Perhaps you can volunteer or take advantage of the new shared economy and work part-time and make some extra money while you’re also benefitting from the social interaction.
Whatever Your Reason, Working after Retirement Can Be Good For You
Studies show that to remain physically and mentally healthy, it’s important you stay working or in a hobby for as long as you can. So if you continue to work or perform voluntary work in your retirement you increase your chances of staying healthy.
Prof. Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer in the UK states: “People are living longer than ever and so retirement presents a real opportunity to be more active than ever before. For many people it is a chance to take on new challenges, it is certainly not the start of a slower pace of life it once was.”
